As a consultant pathologist, you'll setup the lab and ensure compliance with all regulatory authority and oversee the management and running of the hospital medical laboratory and its staff. In many roles, you will also work alongside patients. In histopathology, you will be mostly lab-based. Although specific tasks vary according to your specialty, there are some responsibilities common to all specialties and you'll typically need to:
Examine and talk to a range of patients, using diagnostic skills to determine what tests need to be carried out
Support and advise clinical staff to help them choose the correct tests
The post holder will be responsible for organizing and prioritizing daily work to comply with needs of the management team
To maintain the histology filing system ensuring that files and reports are easily accessible.
To ensure that a high standard of quality and customer care is developed and maintained within the area
To ensure that all enquiries to the department are dealt with promptly and professionally including the resolution of complaints where appropriate
Support the Pathology services by performing the following tasks which are not exhaustive and include filing, minute taking, formatting letters, agenda’s, arranging appointments, ordering supplies and maintaining databases and spread sheets
The Pathology network within BIH are a close knit team who work well together collaboratively promoting safe and effective service to our patients
Work alongside laboratory staff while they complete laboratory tests
Educate sub-ordinates/lab team in the use and limitations of each diagnostic investigation
Provide advice and interpretation of test results and the appropriateness of further investigations
Deliver clinical care to patients (as a histopathology, patient contact is limited unless you're Undertaking a specific role such as taking fine-needle aspiration cytology specimens in different clinics)
Conduct ward rounds and outpatient clinics
Undertake managerial responsibilities, such as planning the workload and staffing of the department, especially at more senior levels
Supervise and teach junior medical staff, depending on your post
Carry out research and keep up to date with new information relevant to your field
Academic Qualification: FRCPath /FCPS / Diplomat of American Board or Equivalent with a Valid PMC Registration
Experience: 7 - 10 years of post-fellowship experience preferably in JCI Accredited Hospitals or in Recognized Hospital or Healthcare Organization
You’ll need to have
Excellent knowledge of the scientific processes behind changes in the body's cells and tissue, which can cause disease
Strong diagnostic skills to determine the type of disease, its severity and extent
Good problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills
The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with patients and staff from a range of backgrounds
