About The Role

Nysonian Inc. is a multi-national retail conglomerate with active operations across the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, with ongoing expansion into the UAE. The business operates multiple consumer brands and is subject to the concurrent legal requirements of each jurisdiction in which it operates. The Legal Department functions as a lean, high-output function embedded directly in the business, spanning commercial contracting, trademark management, active litigation, and cross-border regulatory compliance.

This role has been created to provide dedicated support to the Corporate Legal Counsel across that full mandate. The Legal Assistant will work closely and directly on a continuous basis, handling research, drafting, coordination, tracking, and administrative legal tasks across all active matters. This is not a passive or clerical role. The expectation is that the individual will take genuine ownership of delegated workstreams, manage competing deadlines without hand-holding, and communicate proactively when priorities shift.

What You Will Do

  • Commercial Contract Review and Correspondence
  • Perform first-pass review of incoming contracts, NDAs, vendor agreements, service agreements, and financing documents, identifying non-standard clauses, missing provisions, and items requiring counsel attention. (After Training)
  • Prepare concise written summaries of reviewed agreements for the Corporate Legal Counsel, structured around commercial risk rather than clause-by-clause description.
  • Draft routine legal correspondence with counterparties, external counsel, insurers, and regulatory bodies under supervision.
  • Maintain contract records, track execution status, and coordinate document signing through e-signature platforms.
  • Trademark Portfolio Administration
  • Maintain and update the company's trademark portfolio tracker across the US (USPTO), Canada (CIPO), Australia (IP Australia), the UK (UKIPO), the European Union (EUIPO), and the UAE, including Madrid Protocol international registrations. [We do have External Law-firms so it’s a coordination with them]
  • Calendar trademark renewal deadlines, opposition periods, and filing requirements, providing advance notice to the Corporate Legal Counsel.
  • Coordinate document flow with external trademark counsel across jurisdictions and maintain organized files for opposition proceedings, settlement matters, and licensing arrangements.
  • Litigation and Dispute Support
  • Organize, review, and catalogue litigation documents including pleadings, discovery materials, and court correspondence, maintaining clean and accessible file structures throughout.
  • Maintain a litigation calendar tracking response deadlines, discovery obligations, and court-imposed timelines, with proactive advance notice to counsel.
  • Prepare first-draft executive briefing notes and summaries on litigation matters for review by the Corporate Legal Counsel before presentation to senior management / Executives.
  • Coordinate with outside litigation counsel on document production, scheduling, and information requests.
  • Assist in managing consumer and financial disputes across third-party platforms, tracking open matters and preparing initial correspondence for review.
  • Regulatory Research and Compliance Monitoring
  • Conduct legal and regulatory research across operating jurisdictions (US, Canada, Australia, UK, EU, and UAE), summarizing findings in clear, usable formats for counsel review.
  • Maintain the department's compliance calendar, tracking filing obligations, registration deadlines, and regulatory response requirements across all jurisdictions.
  • Assist in compliance matters spanning consumer protection, marketing and advertising law, data privacy (CCPA/CPRA, GDPR, and equivalents), import and customs regulations, and employment law.
  • Monitor regulatory developments and prepare brief update notes on material changes relevant to the business.
  • Insurance and Warranty Program Support
  • Maintain program documentation, track insurer correspondence, and organize policy and underwriting files for the company's product warranty and insurance programs.
  • Prepare information requests and response documents for underwriting processes, coordinating inputs from internal teams under the direction of senior counsel.
  • Track open items and follow-up obligations across ongoing insurance negotiations and renewals.
  • Cross-Border and Corporate Coordination
  • Assist with corporate maintenance matters including company registrations, statutory filings, and jurisdictional compliance obligations across the group's operating entities.
  • Support cross-border matters including coordination with international external counsel, document authentication logistics, and inter-company agreement administration.
  • Assist in maintaining transfer pricing documentation and inter-company agreement files, tracking execution status and key terms.
  • Provide coordination support on immigration matters as directed, liaising with external immigration counsel.
  • Legal Operations and Internal-Department Administration (Audits)
  • Manage the Department's document management system, ensuring files are organized, version-controlled, and properly maintained.
  • Update internal legal registers including the contract log, litigation register, trademark portfolio tracker, compliance calendar, and dispute tracker.
  • Assist the Corporate Legal Counsel with Departmental Audits, Info-gathering and give a report of legal compliances.
  • Handle ad hoc legal research, drafting, and coordination tasks as directed by the Corporate Legal Counsel. (When fully trained)

Who You Are

  • A law degree (LLB or equivalent) from a recognized institution. Academic performance will be considered but will not be the primary basis for selection.
  • Bar admission is not required for this role.
  • Minimum 6 months – one year of corporate legal experience, whether in a law firm, an In-house legal department, or a structured legal support function. Training contracts and corporate-track internships will be considered.
  • Demonstrable exposure to commercial contracting, corporate transactions, or regulatory matters. Backgrounds exclusively in litigation, family law, or criminal practice are unlikely to fit the immediate requirements of this role.
  • Prior exposure to multi-jurisdictional or international legal work is an advantage but not a requirement.
  • Fast thinker; able to process new information quickly, connect the dots between legal issues and business consequences, and contribute meaningfully without requiring extended briefing on every matter.
  • Fast learner; the business operates across multiple jurisdictions, industries, and legal disciplines simultaneously. The candidate must be comfortable picking up unfamiliar areas of law rapidly and operating effectively before they feel fully ready.
  • AI-literate; familiar with using artificial intelligence tools in a professional context, or demonstrably willing and able to learn. The Legal Department operates with AI-assisted workflows. Candidates who are resistant to or unfamiliar with technology will not thrive in this environment.
  • Ownership mentality; takes responsibility for delegated tasks and sees them through without needing to be chased.
  • Clear communicator; able to write and speak precisely, ask the right questions, and escalate intelligently.
  • Discretion; regular access to sensitive business, litigation, and personal legal matters requires absolute professional discretion. This is a threshold requirement, not a preference.
  • Competent with the Microsoft Office suite as a baseline.
  • Familiarity with e-signature platforms, contract management tools, or trademark docketing systems is an advantage.
  • Comfort working with AI research and drafting tools, or a clear and demonstrable willingness to develop this quickly.

Academic Performance Is Not the Priority

Nysonian will not be selecting on the basis of grades alone. Preference will be given to candidates who, in addition to their degree, have actively participated in activities that demonstrate genuine initiative and a will to learn: moot court, legal aid clinics, student legal societies, internships, published writing, pro bono work, or any other engagement with the field beyond the classroom. Show us what you did when no one was making you do it.

Our Commitment

Nysonian is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age, veteran status, disability, or any other legally protected characteristic. Reasonable accommodations are provided for applicants with disabilities.
