U.S. Mission Pakistan is seeking applications from qualified individuals for Librarian (Cataloging) position in U.S. Embassy, Islamabad.
Basic Function of Position: The incumbent of this position will serve as bibliographic control experts for the region: Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. The work performed by the incumbent is crucial to the international scholarly and academic community. The Library of Congress (LOC) Islamabad office is one of the world's primary providers of bibliographic metadata for publications from the countries it covers. The incumbent prepares original bibliographic records for books, serials and non-book materials like CD’s, DVD’s, maps, etc. according to Resource Description and Access (RDA) standards. The incumbent catalogs these materials for the Library of Congress and other American libraries in one or more of the following languages such as: Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Punjabi, Pushto, Gujarati, Sindhi, Balochi, Brahui, Siraiki, Kashmiri and English. These records are made available to libraries and information centers worldwide. As a cataloging expert the incumbent performs independent whole book cataloging in accordance with the highly complex and technical standards and rules established by LOC/Washington. The incumbent creates/updates authority records according to RDA; makes new proposals for LOC subject headings and classification scheme. The incumbent summarizes the subject of the work in concise and accurate annotations in English for non-English language materials. Incumbent works in an online environment, creating bibliographic and name authority records in the official Library of Congress database and in the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) database.
Qualification Requirements:
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in library work or book publisher/distributor environment is required.
EDUCATION: Completion of University degree (16 years of education) in Library and Information Science, or social sciences or humanities is required.
Job Knowledge: The incumbent must have knowledge of library operations, particularly technical processing of various formats of library materials, is essential.
LANGUAGE: Fluent Speaking/Reading/Writing in Urdu and Good working knowledge in Speaking/Reading/Writing in English and Persian are required. English and Persian Language skills may be tested.
Skills And Abilities: Must have the ability to manage own time for better productivity through efficient cataloging practices; ability to do exact detailed work on a continuing basis. Must be computer literate. Skills and abilities may be tested.

These applicants must submit a copy of the most recent Member Copy Four (4) of the DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, and, if applicable, a letter from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
